The world runs on location. Every renewable energy project, every new road, every store opening, every disaster response — all of it is a spatial decision. Yet the tools people use to make those decisions are stuck in another era: heavy desktop software, ugly interfaces, weeks-long workflows. We're building Atlas to change that — a cloud-native GIS that anyone can pick up and use to make better decisions about the physical world. Maps shouldn't be a specialist's tool. They should be everyone's.
We're looking for a Design Engineer to blur the line between design and code. You'll ship polished UI experiences across the product and marketing surfaces, partnering with designers and founders to translate concepts into production implementations. This is a craft-first role — you'll obsess over layouts, typography, and micro-interactions, and you'll write the code that brings them to life.
What you'll do
- Build production-quality interfaces across the product and marketing surfaces
- Partner with designers and founders to translate concepts into shipped implementations
- Craft UI details — layouts, typography, motion, and micro-interactions
- Prototype novel interfaces and interactions to validate ideas quickly
- Contribute to shared UI foundations and the Atlas design system
- Optimize for performance and accessibility
- Raise frontend craft standards through code reviews and pairing
Who you are
- Strong production experience with React, Next.js, and TypeScript
- Exceptional CSS abilities and a strong design eye
- A portfolio showcasing high-quality frontend work
- Able to own work end-to-end, from concept to shipped
- Comfortable collaborating with designers and engineers in a fast-paced team
- Thrive in a startup environment that values speed, iteration, and quality — someone who can "just do things"
- Bonus: mapping libraries (MapLibre, Mapbox GL, Deck.gl); data visualization; shipped side projects or demos; modern AI tools (Cursor, v0, Claude Code)
Note from the co-founder
As software becomes easier to build, taste is what separates the products people love from everything else. At Atlas, I believe design engineering sits at the core of that — the place where craft, code, and judgment meet, and where the best products are actually made.
If you believe in the power of great design and want to do work that sets the bar for our industry, come build with us.
