Accessing Data in Atlas

Accessing Data in Atlas

Accessing geospatial data is a crucial step in creating maps and analyzing spatial information. In Atlas, you can bring in datasets from the Atlas Data Hub or fetch live data through the OpenStreetMap (OSM) integration. This lesson will guide you through both tools and show how they simplify accessing data for your projects.

🔎 Bringing Data into Atlas

Previously, we discussed how to upload your own external data into Atlas. Now, let's focus on utilizing the Atlas Data Hub and the OpenStreetMap (OSM) integration. These tools make accessing geospatial data simple and effective.

🗂️ Using the Atlas Data Hub

The Atlas Data Hub is a curated collection of datasets, updated regularly to ensure relevance and usefulness for a wide range of users. Here's how to get started:

  1. Find the Add Data Button
Click the "Add Data" button in the interface. This is your gateway to importing datasets.

  2. Explore the Data Hub

    • Search: If you know what you’re looking for, simply use the search bar.
    • Filter: Narrow down results by format (e.g., vector or raster), capabilities, countries, categories, or data sources.

Example: Filter for raster data from Brazil. Select a dataset and bring it into your project.

  3. Upload and Display
After selecting a dataset, it uploads to Atlas. This may take a moment, depending on the file size. Once uploaded, it’s ready for analysis or visualization.

🛠️ OpenStreetMap (OSM) Integration

On the right-side panel, you’ll find Atlas’s integrations, including OpenStreetMap (OSM). OSM is a treasure trove of geospatial data, offering detailed insights into streets, buildings, and more.

  1. Basic Queries
Use predefined queries for common data types like buildings or roads. These options make it easy to get started.

  2. Custom Queries
If you need something specific, search directly or write your own query for even greater flexibility.

  3. Zoom In for Precision
To avoid overwhelming the system, zoom in on a specific area before fetching data.

    • Example: Zoom into Paris. Request "buildings," and the platform will return results for the visible map extent.

🚀 Pro Tip: Combine the Tools!

Both Atlas Data Hub and OpenStreetMap are powerful on their own. Together, they allow you to mix curated datasets with highly specific, live OSM data. Test both and see what works best for your project.

🎉 That’s all for this lesson! Dive into the Atlas Data Hub and OpenStreetMap integration to explore geospatial data like never before. See you in the next session!
