How to measure routes

The Routes Tool in Atlas allows you to measure distances and estimated travel times between multiple points on a map. Whether you’re planning trips, analyzing transportation options, or estimating delivery times, this tool makes it quick and easy.

You can access the Routes Tool from the lower-left corner of the map interface, where other measurement tools are located.


Step 1: Open the Routes Tool

  1. Log in to Atlas: Open your web browser and log in to Atlas.
  2. Open a Map: Either create a new project or open an existing map.
  3. Find the Routes Tool:
    • Look at the lower-left corner of the map interface.
    • Click the Routes Tool icon to start measuring.

Step 2: Choose a Route Type

Before measuring, select how you want to calculate the route:

  • Straight Line: Measures the direct distance between points.
  • Walking: Calculates pedestrian-friendly paths.
  • Cycling: Finds the best bike-friendly routes.
  • Driving: Plans car routes using road networks.
  • Transit: Estimates travel using public transportation (where available).

💡 Each option provides both the exact distance and an estimated travel time based on real-world conditions.


Step 3: Measure a Route

  1. Click to Set Start and End Points

    • Click anywhere on the map to set the starting point.
    • Double-click to set the destination.
    • The tool will calculate the route and display the total distance and estimated travel time.
  2. Add Multiple Stops (Optional)

    • Click additional locations to extend your route.

Step 4: Save and Style Your Route

  1. Save the Route as a Dataset

    • Click Save as Dataset to store the route in your project.
    • The route will be saved as a layer containing points (waypoints) and a line (route path).
  2. Style the Route Layer

    • Open Standard Styling to customize the appearance:
      • Points: Adjust size, color, or labels for waypoints.
      • Line (Outline): Change thickness and color for better visibility.

Tips for Measuring Routes

  • Select the Route Type First: The tool calculates paths differently based on your choice.
  • Use Waypoints for Precision: More waypoints help refine complex routes.
  • Zoom In for Accuracy: Click precisely on roads or pathways for better results.
