Project settings control how your map behaves and displays. Access these options from the project menu in the top left corner of any open project.
Accessing Project Settings
Click the project menu button in the top left corner (next to the Atlas logo) to open the settings dropdown. This menu provides quick access to project-level configuration and navigation.
Menu Options
Home
Return to the Atlas home screen. Your current project saves automatically before navigating away.
Rename Project
Change the project's display name:
- Click Rename project
- Enter the new name in the dialog
- Click Save or press Enter
Project names appear in the home screen, browser tabs, and when sharing. Use clear, descriptive names that identify the project's purpose or location.
Duplicate Project
Create a copy of the entire project including all layers, styles, and settings:
- Click Duplicate project
- The copy opens automatically with "(Copy)" appended to the name
- Rename the duplicate as needed
Useful for:
- Creating variations of a map for different audiences
- Testing changes without affecting the original
- Starting a new project based on an existing template
Set Map Origin
Define the default map view when the project opens:
- Navigate the map to your desired starting position and zoom level
- Click Set map origin
- The current view is saved as the project's default
The map origin determines:
- The initial view when opening the project
- The default view when sharing or embedding
- The starting position for collaborators
Tip: Set the origin to show the most important area of your project at an appropriate zoom level.
Lock Map Bounds
Restrict map navigation to a specific geographic area:
- Navigate to the area you want to constrain
- Click Lock map bounds
- Choose the boundary extent or use the current view
When bounds are locked:
- Users cannot pan outside the defined area
- Zoom limits may be applied automatically
- The map always returns to the bounded area
To unlock bounds, click Lock map bounds again and select Remove bounds.
Useful for:
- Focused presentations on a specific region
- Embedded maps that should stay on topic
- Public maps where you want to control the viewing area
View
Access display and collaboration visibility options:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Show/hide multiplayer cursors | Toggle visibility of other collaborators' cursors on the map |
| Show/hide comments | Toggle visibility of comment markers on the map |
These settings affect only your view and don't change what other collaborators see.
Best Practices
Setting Up a New Project
- Name it clearly - Use a descriptive name from the start
- Add your data - Import or connect your datasets
- Style your layers - Configure colors, labels, and visibility
- Set the origin - Define the default view for all users
- Lock bounds if needed - Restrict navigation for focused presentations
Preparing for Sharing
Before sharing a project:
- Set an appropriate map origin that shows your key data
- Consider locking bounds to keep viewers focused
- Test the project by opening it fresh to verify the starting view
- Rename to something clear for external viewers
Creating Templates
Use duplicate to create reusable project templates:
- Set up a project with common layers and styles
- Configure the map origin and any locked bounds
- Duplicate when starting similar projects
- Modify the copy for each specific use case
